  When recently searching for a car, I found several useful sites that list the top 7 purchased used cars in my area. The reason that I was looking for a used car for sale in my areawas due to the fact that I was driving a gas guzzling SUV. I was spending more on gas than I was making so I decided to trade in my old car for a new gas thrifty model. Listed below are the top 8 used cars good on gas in my area.

  Chevy Volt
   
  Chevy Volt is another option if you want an American made car. The volt is an electric car that gets 40 mpg on the highway. The Volt is extremely safe with a five-star crash safety rating. The car is a little more expensive and there aren't many of them out there since they have only been produced over the last couple of years. The lowest priced Chevy Volt that I found was for $10,000.

  Honda Civic
   
  The Honda Civic is one of the most popular car brands of all-time and they are legendary for their ability to run forever. They are also great on gas mileage, getting around 35 miles per gallon highway. The used cars that I found in my area generally ranged from $6,000 to $8,000 pending on the age of the car. Most of the cars had around 100,000 miles on their engines but Civics have been known to go for at least 150K.

  The Volkswagen Golf is one of my favorite cars on the market. I really enjoy driving hatchbacks and it is one of the sportiest looking little hatchbacks on the road. Golfs also get very good gas mileage at 42 mpg but there aren't many of them being resold due to their popularity. People really seem to enjoy driving those cars and you don't find many owners that are selling them. The 2.0 liter turbocharged engine gives the car a lot of pick-me-up when compared to other gas thrifty cars and Volkswagens are known for their handling and reliability. Great cars. That being said, they are a little more expensive with really old Golfs going for around $8,000, while newer used models going for $12,000 and up.

  The Ford Focus is the fastest growing midsize sedan in popularity in the U.S. and for good cause. The sedan is roomy on the inside while still maintaining the fuel mileage of smaller vehicles. The hatchback version of the Focus is a lot like the Golf above but for less money. There are plenty of Focus models available and they get around 34 mpg highway. Ford's reputation is growing as a very dependable car and the interior of the Focus is very nice. The Ford SYNC system is a great in-dash entertainment and navigation system, while the cloth interior seats are very comfy and there is plenty of leg and head room.

  Nissan Leaf
   
  The Nissan Leaf provides a smooth ride and great gas mileage. As an electric car, the Leaf can go for around 100 miles prior to having to be charged. The only drawback is the same concern with many electric vehicles. If you are looking for a car with some good horsepower under the hood, you are likely going to be disappointed. It's a great little car for short trips but highway driving can be a hassle with its lack of acceleration.

  The Hyundai Elantra is another car that is in the same class as the Ford Focus, just a little smaller. The Elantra is a decent car that produces a good amount of horsepower for a gas thrifty engine that gets 40 mpg on the highway. Elantra models feature a 1.8-liter engine that puts out about 110 horsepower, a good amount for a car its size. While not as small as most gas thrifty models, the cabin isn't quite as large as the Focus but it still has all the same comforts. The cars for sale in my area ranged from $5000 to $10,000 depending on the mileage of the car.

  The Kia Optima is another car that is growing in popularity recently due to its gas-sipping engine. The Optima is about the size of the Ford Focus and gets good gas mileage at 40 mpg highway. There are also many low cost Optima sedans available in my area with many of them under $6,000. The Optima has a very good safety and reliability rating and its 2.4 liter engine produces 200 horsepower. Not a bad option if you want a car that gets around 40 mpg.

  So those are the best on gas cars in my area for sale that I found. I haven't made a decision on which car to buy yet as I am still saving money. There seem to be several financing options available as well. I am looking at companies that provide car loans for used cars in my area. Many of those companies are offering very lowest interest rates on loans that are actually lower than I am currently paying. So hopefully I can get a new used car good on gas in my area and save a little money in the process.
